NCERT Solutions for Poem The Squirrel Class 7 English Honeycomb

A squirrel is described in this poem by the poet. In an upright position, the gray-furred little creature sat on a tree branch eating a nut. He has a twisted tail, like a question mark. If anyone ran around the tree, it would run to the other side. Squirrels are funny little animals that enjoy playing with humans. The squirrel would not be scared if humans ran around his tree. It likes to tease and play. Thus, it would also run around the tree from the other side.

Working with the Poem

Question 1: Why does the poet say the squirrel “wore a question mark for tail”? Draw a squirrel, or find a picture of a squirrel sitting on the ground. How would you describe its tail?

Solution:

According to the poet, a squirrel sitting on the ground has a bushy tail curled back on its body in a curved shape that resembles the punctuation at the end of an interrogative sentence. I would describe it as a furry and bushy cloth worn on its back that seems to ask you the question – what

Question 2: Do we usually say that an animal ‘wears’ a tail? What do we say? (Think: Does an animal wear a coat? Consult a dictionary if you like, and find out how ‘wear’ is used in different ways.)

Solution:

We don't usually say an animal wears a tail. In most cases, we say that an animal 'has' a tail. (Wear refers to carrying or taking something from your body, such as a cloth or a smile or jewelry or perfume. You can wear your hair in different ways, such as a ponytail, knotted or pleated, and that is called how you wear your hair.)

Question 3: “He liked to tease and play”. Who is teasing whom? How ?

Solution:

Squirrels are playful and naughty. The squirrel enjoys being chased by other squirrels and children. When the poet and his friends ran around the tree where the squirrel is sitting, it played with them and teasing them.
