Everybody believed that Vijay Singh, the famous wrestler, was unbeatable.  Vijay Singh was a bit boastful at times.  Once he took it upon himself to fight a ghost. Vijay Singh set out to find a ghost in the Haunted Desert.  An old woman gave him a small packet containing an egg and a lump of salt.  Vijay Singh met a ghost who claimed he was his friend, Natwar. Vijay Singh demonstrated his strength by crushing what the ghost thought was a piece of rock.  The ghost avoided a wrestling bout with Vijay Singh but decided to conquer him through cheating.  He invited Vijay Singh to be his guest for the night. Vijay Singh kept awake at night. He cleverly duped the ghost in his own cave.  The ghost believed that Vijay Singh was unbeatable.  He ran away leaving all his property which made Vijay Singh wealthy for life.

QUESTIONS I

Question 1: What was Vijay Singh's weakness? Which awkward situation did it push him into?

Answer

Vijay Singh was physically very strong and a renowned wrestler but despite of all these qualities he had weakness which was his fondness of boasting. One day he boasted that he was not afraid of ghosts and was willing to meet a stout ghost. This placed him in an awkward position as everyone now expected him to go and meet a ghost.


Question 2: Was the old woman's gift to Vijay Singh eccentric? Why?

Answer

The old woman thrust a small packet into Vijay Singh's hands while he was leaving the village. It contained a lump of salt and egg. It seemed quite eccentric at first but later proved to be really helpful in the desert.


Question 3: Why did Vijay Singh ask the ghost disguised as Natwar to come closer?

Answer

Vijay Singh was a very good wrestler, he asked the ghost to come nearer in an attempt to size his strength. Vijay Singh already has realized that it was not his friend but a ghost that he was conversing with.


Question 4: What made the ghost speechless? Why?

Answer

The ghost was accustomed of people getting scared after meeting him but Vijay Singh's nonchalant behaviour made the ghost uncomfortable and speechless. While usually people used to run away just by meeting the ghost, here was a man who was willing to have a wrestling match with him.


Question 5: Why did Vijay Singh say "Appearances can be deceptive"?

Answer

In an attempt to have a psychological edge over Vijay Singh, the ghost told him that Vijay Singh while boasts of being a wrestler does not look strong to him. In response to this, Vijay Singh told that appearances can be deceptive; even the ghost has attempted to disguise himself as Natwar which was not the case.

Question 1: How did Vijay Singh use the egg? How did he use the lump of salt?

Answer

Vijay Singh used the egg and the salt lump to give the ghost an illusion that he was very strong. He used the egg's cracking sound to show that he could easily break a rock with his bare hands while the ghost has failed to do So.

Vijay Singh later used the salt lump to misguide the ghost that he had the ability to crush rock into powder. This panicked the ghost by a great measure.


Question 2: Why did Vijay Singh conclude that the ghost would not be a worthy opponent to him? Was he fair in his judgement?

Answer

As the ghost failed to match the skills of Vijay Singh in breaking the rock, he proclaimed that the ghost was not a worthy opponent to fight with.

This was very smart on part of Vijay Singh as the ghost might have killed him in combat. This judgement doesn't seem fair as Vijay Singh has tricked in both the exercises with the rock.


Question 3: Why did Vijay Singh ask the ghost to accompany him to town next day?

Answer

Vijay Singh asked the ghost to accompany him to town the next day as his prisoner as he wanted to show him as a trophy of victory.


Question 4: What made the ghost believe Vijay Singh was dead?

Answer

Vijay Singh arranged the bolster, pillows and bedsheets as if to look like a sleeping person so when the ghost hit the bolsters with the bat, Vijay Singh was unhurt. There was no noise after the ghost hit the supposed sleeping Vijay Singh, not even a groan. This made ghost believe that Vijay Singh was dead.


Question 5: Vijay Singh complained of insects in the cave. What was he referring to, and why?

Answer

Vijay Singh was referring to the act of the ghost hitting him seven times with the wing flapping of an insect. He did this in order to intimidate the ghost by posing as much stronger.


Question 6: Was it really a ghost who Vijay Singh be fooled? Who do you think it was?

Answer

No, I don't think that it was really a ghost whom Vijay Singh be fooled. The storyline speaks of this particular ghost as if it was just a regular person, while the activities and the characteristics of the ghosts are expected to be different.

It is very likely that it was just a robber posing as a ghost in order to loot those passing through the desert.
